Sea Kayak Rentals

 

This marks our 24th season of servicing the seakayak enthusiasts with rentals for destinations on Vancouver Island. We have two locations for you to pickup your sea kayak rentals. Nanaimo is our base for rentals for the westcoast of Vancouver Island and destination in the Gulf Islands. Telegraph Cove is our base for rentals for the northern waters of the Central Coast and Vancouver Island North. Our  months of operation start in June and end in the first week of October. We do require pre-booking for rentals and transports. We have paddled these waters for twenty plus seasons. We have a good understanding of this wilderness in the good and bad weather. We offer sea kayak rentals, marine VHF radio rental and a professional service for trip planning (fee required).

The majority of our kayak rentals are necky kayaks   which have been chosen for their stability and performance. With a large selection of kayaks ranging from singles to doubles, in plastic and in composite  fiberglass. Our transport vessel was launched in 07 and has proven to be an efficient design for the waters of this area.

Discovery sets a new standard of water safety with our new 30ft Transport /Landing Craft named "Discovery Skiff,". For the 2010 season we will have a new 14 ft cabin added to the boat where guests can sit in comfort during the short but scenic trip to our destination. Our boat is equipped with padded sea kayak racks that make it easy for front loading and unloading at all beach destination in the Johnstone Strait - Blackfish Sound Area.

Our boat is powered by twin Honda 130 hp engine to ensure a comfortable and stable ride. The capacity of our boats is 8 guests and 8 sea kayaks with gear. Survival Suits are used on open water crossing. The suits help keep guests warm and safe. Our vessel is equipped with a standard package of technology to ensure your safety while onboard.

 

Discovery can provide transport and water taxi services for group and kayak rentals. Our transport boat is comfortable with a new large cabin and loads of deck space for your gear. This vessel is specifically designed for the waters of Johnstone Strait and surrounding areas. It is designed with a shallow draft to access beaches at low as well as high tides. It provides us with comfort and reliability. It is capable of easy beach access and rocky landing sites.

Our boat is specifically designed for the transport of sea kayaks, gear and paddlers. It is designed to accommodate mid sized groups who want to explore the waters of Broughton Archipelago, Johnstone Strait and Knight Inlet.

Group and Individual transports to destinations in Johnstone Strait and Broughton Archipelago must be booked (booking page) by email and confirmed with a telephone call to 1-250-756-0094 seven days a week. BC Ferries...

Access Vancouver Island by ferry from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver or Twassassen to Nanaimo Terminal on Central Vancouver Island.

Driving directions from Departure Bay Ferry Terminal in Nanaimo to Telegraph Cove.

 

  • Total Distance to cover is 346 km from Nanaimo to Telegraph Cove. Take a cell phone in the vehicle you are driving and realize that there is no service between Campbell River and Telegraph Cove.
  • Be prepared to pay $1.10 or more for one litre of gasoline up to Campbell River and $1.20 in the North Island. (take note of the following recommendations)
  • Gas stops are best taken at Denman Island just passed Qualicum and the Sayward Junction (take note that if you traveling at night you should know that most gas bars close at 9 pm and most restaurants close at 8 pm)
  • Travel Time Allowance  4 hr. 14 min (without stops) or (5 hr. 30 min with stops).
  • Head north on Departure Bay Rd toward Randle Rd       
  • Turn right at Norwell Drive and drive up the hill to the Island Hwy at the second light intersection.       
  • Turn right at Island Hwy and drive 15 kms through the heart of the North of Nanaimo passing Northbrook Mall, Tom Harris Chevrolet, Costco and Wal-Mart at the Woodgrove Shopping Centreto the on-ramp onto HWY – 19 just passed the Woodgrove Shopping Centre.
  • From here the inland island divided highway by passes Parksville, Qualicum, Courtenay-Comox, and Campbell River.

  • Just North of Campbell River the inland island highway merges into a single lane highway passing Sayward, Woss and a great deal of scenic island mountains, streams and evergreen forests.                                      
  • After your four hour of driving you will come across the signs to Telegraph Cove on a downhill section of the on HWY-19. Take the right hand turn after the sign and follow it cautiously 14.0 km toTelegraph Cove Resorts. This road has just been paved in the last year and is shared with the logging industry…so caution is advised….put your headlights on at all times and if a loaded logging truck is near you, give way to them and then continue the interested drive to Telegraph Cove.
  •  Telegraph Cove Resorts Parking is on your right as you enter a narrowing of the road in view of some of the older houses of the Cove. Our meeting spot is at the old boat ramp beside the TCR Office.
  • If you have booked accommodations at Telegraph Cove and you arrive after hours, the keys for you Cabin/Rooms will be left on the TCR Office door in a envelope with the name of your party on it.  If for any reason you need to contact the TCR Office the number is 1-800-200-4665.  If you need to contact Larry during the summer try his cell phone at 1-250-619-2714 or leave a message on the answering machine at 1-250-756-0094.

A complete sea kayak rental from TC Kayaks consists of the following equipment:

  • a necky single or seaward/necky triple/double sea kayak
  • a comfortable PFD
  • a hand pump
  • a rescue device
  • two paddles for a single or three for a double sea kayak
  • a neoprene/nylon spraydeck
  • a sponge
  • signal flares (deposit required)

Outside of the above equipment, we strongly recommend that you come equipped with the following devices for your trip:

  • a nautical chart of the area you are going to do you trip in laminated sections (previous knowledge of the area can also be gained through google earth).
  • two communication devices, a VHF radio/cell phone/satelite phone that is registered with the carrier for this area.  (Rogers)
  • signaling device (mirror, horn, strobe light) and the ability to use them.
  • an updated first aid kit and the protocol to call for assistance over the VHF radio.

I CERTIFY THAT I AM AWARE THAT KAYAKING IS A DANGEROUS SPORT AND THAT I AM COGNIZANT OF ALL THE INHERENT DANGERS OF KAYAKING. I UNDERSTAND THAT DISCOVERY KAYAKING LTD. IS IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAFETY OF MYSELF OR OF THE EQUIPMENT I AM RENTING .

I understand that Discovery Kayaking Ltd. makes no warranty as to the fitness, merchantability, or suitability of the equipment. I am fully responsible for my own safety and for the equipment.

I agree to repair or replace in a manner acceptable to Discovery Kayaking Ltd. any of the above equipment damaged prior to its return to Discovery Kayaking Ltd. If I fail to repair or replace such equipment, I will pay the cost of repairs or replacement as determined by Discovery Kayaking Ltd.

In consideration of being allowed to rent this equipment, I hereby personally assume all risks in connection with the equipment and I further release the renter,Discovery Kayaking Ltd., agents and operators from the liability for any harm, injury or damage which may befall me or any equipment used by me while I am renting equipment from Discovery Kayaking Ltd., including all risks connected wherewith, whether foreseen or unforeseen. I further agree to save and hold harmless Discovery Kayaking Ltd., it's agents and operators from any claim by me or my family, estate, heirs, or assigns arising out of my rental of equipment from the said Discovery Kayaking Ltd.

I further state unless indicated otherwise by my parent or guardian signing, below, that I am of lawful age and legally competent to sign this affirmation and release, that I understand the terms herein are contractual and not a mere recital, and that I have signed this document as my own free act.

I have had all medical examinations deemed necessary by me to assure myself of and assume my own responsibility for my physical fitness and capability to use the rented equipment described above.

I HAVE FULLY INFORMED MYSELF OF THE CONTENTS OF THIS AFFIRMATION AND RELEASE BY READING IT BEFORE I SIGNED IT.

 I agree to leave the appropriate damage deposit, plus pre-pay in full the cost of the rental. I agree to return the boat and gear in clean condition.
