A Little History...

Seakayak rentals have been part of our business since 1984, when we started North Island Water Sports in Nanaimo's Departure Bay. Along with our retail store we serviced a great number of people who ventured to points far beyond Departure Bay. We moved up into the Telegraph Cove Area in 1986. We started a successful business under the name Telegraph Cove Sea Kayaking in the same year and saw the business grow each year while rental shops popped up at destination towns all over Vancouver Island.

We now offer sea kayak rentals to clients in Nanaimo and Telegraph Cove. We were the leader in requiring clients to document their experience to ensure that we were not putting anyone at risk. We maintain this policy right to today. We enjoy meeting people from all different area of BC and the world for that matter but we feel we have an obligation to help keep everyone that rents with us safe. That being said we can only inform clients of the weather conditions they are about to endure.

We maintain a rental/touring fleet of some thirty sea kayaks. The brand name of the type of seakayaks we have is NECKY. We have a selection of all sizes of seakayaks and maintain comfortable support equipment, like lifejackets and paddles. We supply a spare paddle, paddles, lifejacket, spraydeck, flares, pump and a rescue device for all our rentals. We will direct you to information about weather and camp spots. We encourage everyone who comes to Johnstone Strait to bring a communication device with them to ensure that you can call if you need assistance.

We offer a service of transport for individuals and small groups who rent our seakayaks during the summer months. Discovery Expeditions can provide transport our kayak rentals. Our transport boat at 30ft and its unique design allows us to transport gear,kayaks, and individuals who rent our sea kayaks and easily land you on beaches in the area with minimal impact in all types of weather. This boat operates out of Telegraph Cove seven days a week.

During the summer of 2008, our boat assisted in the recovery of barrel of fuel that were leaking in the Robson Bight Ecological Reserve on Vancouver Island when a logging companies barge loss vehicles and cargo overboard. We feel that we along with the warden boats were responsible for saviing the shoreline from being covered with gasoline and diesel fuel. Although gasoline that spilled into the water caused a slick, it did not appear to change the movements of pods of Orca that were in the vicinity at that time. We were proud to be of service to protection the waters of Robson Bight and stand ready to assist for any reason in the future.

 

 

 

 

 

Seakayak Rentals Rates for 2008

 

 

Each kayak rental includes the isssue of the following gear. Your choice of a single kayak in plastic or fiberglass. Your choice of double kayak as a double holer or a triple holer. Each kayak is equipped with one or two paddles and a spare paddle. Each kayak is equipped with one or two spray decks, a pump, a floatation device, a sponge, flares and two lifejackets.

A small laminated map is available but should not be used for navigation. Nautrical Charts of the area are available at most outdoor and marine stores. You should purchase these when you are planning your trip at home. A VHF radio is another essential piece of equipment for the your trip.

Discovery Transport and Cruising for 2008

Our transport boat is specifically designed for the sea kayak industry. It is an open boat that can carry a large amount of gear, sea kayaks and kayakers to destinations with shallow water access in Johnstone Strait, Blackfish Sound, Queen Charlotte Sound and the Broughton Archipelago. It cruises at a reasonable speed and is extremely weather tolerant. The capacity of the boat is best with a group of six kayaks, gear and six paddlers or less. I CERTIFY THAT I AM AWARE THAT KAYAKING IS A DANGEROUS SPORT AND THAT I AM COGNIZANT OF ALL THE INHERENT DANGERS OF KAYAKING. I UNDERSTAND THAT TELEGRAPH COVE SEA KAYAKING IS IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAFETY OF MYSELF OR OF THE EQUIPMENT I AM RENTING .

I understand that Discovery Expeditions makes no warranty as to the fitness, merchantability, or suitability of the equipment. I am fully responsible for my own safety and for the equipment.

I agree to repair or replace in a manner acceptable to Johnstone Strait Kayaking any of the above equipment damaged prior to its return to Discovery Expeditions. If I fail to repair or replace such equipment, I will pay immediately to Discovery Expeditions Kayaking Rentals the cost incurred in repairing or replacing the equipment as determined by Discovery Expeditions.

In consideration of being allowed to rent this equipment, I hereby personally assume all risks in connection with the equipment and I further release the renter,Discovery Expeditions, agents and operators from the liability for any harm, injury or damage which may befall me or any equipment used by me while I am renting equipment from Discovery Expeditions, including all risks connected wherewith, whether foreseen or unforeseen. I further agree to save and hold harmless Discovery Expeditions, it's agents and operators from any claim by me or my family, estate, heirs, or assigns arising out of my rental of equipment from the said Discovery Expeditions.

I further state unless indicated otherwise by my parent or guardian signing, below, that I am of lawful age and legally competent to sign this affirmation and release, that I understand the terms herein are contractual and not a mere recital, and that I have signed this document as my own free act.

I have had all medical examinations deemed necessary by me to assure myself of and assume my own responsibility for my physical fitness and capability to use the rented equipment described above.

I HAVE FULLY INFORMED MYSELF OF THE CONTENTS OF THIS AFFIRMATION AND RELEASE BY READING IT BEFORE I SIGNED IT.

 I agree to leave the appropriate damage deposit, plus pre-pay in full the cost of the rental. I agree to return the boat and gear in clean condition.
