Orca 1 offers a six day nomadic Johnston Strait and Broughton Archipelago providing 6 days to experience the wilderness, wildlife and rainforests of northern Vancouver Island. Every summers Orca ( killer whales) return to these pristine waters of Johnstone Strait to feast on salmon. Bald Eagles, Dall's porpoises and white side dolphins also follow to join a summer spectacle of the inside passage.
This tour is a nomadic kayak trip that will include camping. As such be prepared to pack gear in your kayak. If you require Dry Bags for your gear Discovery Expeditions can provide them.
Enjoy the many islands and remote passages of Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound from your sea kayak, and hike through the enchanting coastal rainforests of the region. The walk through the abandoned village of Mi'mkwamlis, the exchange of information with summer researchers, and a visit to the waters of Robson Bight are also highlights, weather permitting.

Two campsites are used on these trips to allow us time to explore the vastness of intertidal waters of the area.
There's no better way to encounter pods of these friendly (and inappropriately named) Killer Whales than up close and personal, while sea kayaking the British Columbia waters of Johnstone Strait.

We specialize in close encounter sea kayak expeditions with orcas, or killer whales, other whales such as humpback whales, minke whales, dolphins and porpoises, seals and sea lions. Day 1: - The morning starts at Telegraph Cove, where the guides demonstrate the safety and important steps to enjoyable sea kayaking. During the afternoon, we will stop on a sheltered beach for our first walk into the coastal rainforest. By early evening we will arrive at our first camp.
Day 2: - This morning we will embark deeper into Johnstone Strait with a visit to the edge of Robson Bight Ecological Reserve. Lunch is spent often with the wardens' of the Reserve on a open beach in clear site of the entire area of Johnstone Strait. Late afternoon is a great time to wash up at a local stream. After which we make our way back to camp and catch an evening paddle after dinner.
Day 3: - A morning journey to a small group of islands rich in marine life, eagle rookeries, and best of all, small remote beaches that catch the afternoon sun well into the evening. Time will be spent exploring the immediate shorelines of these islands and adjacent beaches. Mid-morning features a walk into the rain forest.
Afternoon starts with sharing lunch with whale researchers on a bluff high atop Johnstone Strait. If Orca pass by you have the best seat in the house. As the afternoon continues we make our way back to camp for dinner. An evening paddle is a pleasant way to end this day.
Day 4: - This morning we resume our journey through remote passages to a destination of some twenty uninhabited islands. During our stay in these islands you will explore the site of the last potlatch and walk an ancient pathway to carvings, totems, and abandoned residences of a distant past. Later that afternoon we will paddle a different route back to camp and explore more wonders of this area.
Day 5 : - We bid a farewell to this interesting part of our trip and continue our journey back into the waters frequently visited by Orca, White-sided Dolphins, and Minke Whale.
By late afternoon our journey will continue into a shoreline rich in kelp forests and alive with the sounds of kingfishers, eagles, and raven.
The evening is capped off with dinner and reflection on a complete day of pleasant experiences.
Day 6: - A relaxed day with a short journey to explore an island that has unique small beaches and plants. Your guide will situate you close to the travelling paths of Orca Whales, Eagles and other wildlife of these parts.
By late-afternoon arrive back in Telegraph Cove.
Clients may also delay returning to Telegraph Cove for those wishing to join us in Johnstone Strait for Salmon fishing. Salmon fishing charters will be offered July thru to Sept at a modest cost. Enjoy fishing aboard a new 16ft Lund awith all gear supplied. Our fishing boat is perfect for one to two people. You can expect to catch Pink, Sockeye, Coho, Spring or you can have your fishing guide explore some secret spots for Red Snapper and Ling Cod. You will need to ensure that you have a Salt Water Fishing License.
